The songs and pieces (which are meant to somewhat explain the song choice) flow from their meeting through growing to know each other, to the beach, to the divorce, and then beyond, to the point where we see them in the original trilogy of movies. Hopefully, you'll be able to tell what fits where. ♥

Science & Faith - The Script

You won't find faith or hope down a telescope
You won't find heart or soul in the stars
You can break everything down to chemicals
But you can't explain a love like ours.
It's the way we feel, yeah this is real.
Charles has always known that 'Love' is just a rush of hormones, finely tuned to evoke a specific response.
He's never had any reason to doubt that, any reason to really be serious.
But, after meeting Erik, he begins to have faith.

Momentum - The Hush Sound

All we need is a little bit of momentum
Break down these walls that we've built around ourselves
All we need is a little bit of inertia
Break down and tell break down and tell

Erik doubts his humanity sometimes, after what Shaw has done to him, separating, protecting, what little of himself is left from the killer he is becoming.
And Charles is a chink in that wall.

Arms - Christina Perri

How many times will you let me change my mind and turn around
I can't decide if I'll let you save my life or if I'll drown

I hope that you see right through my walls
I hope that you catch me, 'cause I'm already falling
I'll never let a love get so close
You put your arms around me and I'm home
"You're not alone."
Every night, those words, and every night Erik betrays himself a little more,
letting Charles that much more in, letting those arms wrap around him.

Harbor - Vienna Teng

Sail your sea
Meet your storm
All I want is to be your harbor
The light in me
Will guide you home
All I want is to be your harbor
Peace will never be an option, Erik knows, but with Charles, something to call a home might be.

Rain - Patty Griffin

It's hard to listen to a hard hard heart
Beating close to mine
Pounding up against the stone and steel
Walls that I won't climb
Sometimes a hurt is so deep deep deep
You think that you're gonna drown

Nightmares are the hardest to block, Charles finds, and all he can do is offer what comfort he can: warmth, murmurs and promises of safety.
And pushing the will to carry on back from his own emotions.

The Unwinding Cable Car - Anberlin

You're so brilliant, grace marked your heart
You're so brilliant (This is the correlation)
Don't soon forget (Between salvation and love, don't drop your arms)
You're so brilliant (I'll guard your heart)
Grace marked your heart (With quiet words I'll lead you in and out of the dark)

What Erik could be blinds Charles with its brilliance, tarnished by his past, and Charles makes it his goal to make Erik shine.

You Are the Moon - The Hush Sound

You don't see what you possess, a beauty calm and clear
It floods the sky and blurs the darkness like a chandelier
All the light that you possess is skewed by lakes and seas
The shattered surface, so imperfect, is all that you believe

I will bring a mirror, so silver, so exact
So precise and so pristine, a perfect pane of glass
I will set the mirror up to face the blackened sky
You will see your beauty every moment that you rise
There is so much good inside Erik, if only Charles could make him see it.

記憶の島の月 (Moon of the Island of Memories) - sgt. [Instrumental]

Erik's memories are a jumble of pain,
the good twisted into threads of bad until he cannot separate the lullaby his mother would hum
from the sound of the train taking them away from the only home he's known.
Crash and Burn - Savage Garden

If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash then crash and burn
You're not alone

'Cause there has always been heartache and pain
And when it's over you'll breathe again
You'll breathe again
Charles will repeat himself as many times as he needs to to make Erik understand: he's not going anywhere.

If I Ever Lose My Faith In You - Sting

I never saw no miracle of science
That didn't go from a blessing to a curse
I never saw no military solution
That didn't always end up as something worse but
Let me say this first

If I ever lose my faith in you
There'd be nothing left for me to do
Before Erik realizes it, Charles has become his grounding point, a constant presence in the back of his mind, so naive and good.
His faith in himself is only as strong as his faith in Charles.

Cold War Transmissions - Anberlin

This is Russian radio here
Run while you still, you still can

Different sides we take our stance
this could be our last goodbye forever
They stand, next to each other, but worlds apart now. It is a turning point, but they don't know which way to turn.

All We Are - OneRepublic

Time can tear you apart
But it won't break anything that you are, you are

We won't say our goodbyes you know it's better that way
We won't break, we won't die
It's just a moment of change
All we are, all we are, is everything that's right
All we need, all we need, a lover's alibi
As they leave, the words he can't say get caught in his throat, and so Erik just stares, seeing what could have been,
knowing this can't be the end.

Vienna - The Fray

There's really no way to reach me
'Cause I'm already gone

Maybe in five or ten yours and mine will meet again
Straighten this whole thing out
Maybe then honesty need not be feared as a friend or an enemy
This is the distance
And this is my game face
He doesn't remove the helmet, except to sleep, even though he knows, logically, that Charles can't reach him.
The helmet is a physical wall, protecting what has been made vulnerable again,
and what will harden again in time.

Antebellum - Vienna Teng

I know the border lines we drew between us
Keep the weapons down,
Keep the wounded safe;
I know our antebellum innocence
Was never meant to see the light of our armistice.
But how much would I give to have it back again?
How much did we lose
To live this way?
They can never return to what was, but in time, it will mend.

Brothers on a Hotel Bed - Death Cab for Cutie

You may tire of me as our December sun is setting because I'm not who I used to be
No longer easy on the eyes but these wrinkles masterfully disguise
The youthful boy below
Who turned your way and saw something he was not looking for:
Both a beginning and an end
They've changed so much, been through so much over the years, but as they both know, at heart, they are still friends.
